Cairn Medical: Restoring the Heart and Soul in Medicine

Find Your Personalized Path to Wellness

Welcome to CAIRN MEDICAL, where your health is our priority. Our unique approach integrates genomics and a direct care model, empowering you to take charge of your well-being. Dr. Louder and her team of dedicated providers and health coaches work collaboratively to provide you with a comprehensive and personalized holistic healthcare experience.

Your membership allows you to be a part of our practice and receive your care with us. This model is different from the standard medical model.  Gone are the long waits for appointments, and then short 10- to 15-minute visits to try and solve a problem or to delve deeply into your concerns.  All appointments are either 30 or 60 minutes. We meet with you either via telemedicine or, if you’re local, at our location in Holland, Michigan.

What Sets Us Apart?

Genomics Integration: We gave up guessing. Why? Because we don’t need to anymore!

By unlocking the secrets of your genetic code, we understand your unique predispositions and potentials. Our cutting-edge genomics analysis allows us to tailor our approach to your individual needs. By examining your DNA, we gain insights into your body's specific requirements, enabling us to create a personalized health plan that aligns with your genetic makeup. If you have questions like: Keto v. Mediterranean, high intensity v. endurance activity, or how well do I methylate, then starting with genomics is the answer for you. It is your blueprint for your health journey, no matter where you start.

Direct Care Model: You work directly with us, as one of a limited number of patients.

This ensures we can spend more time with you as a patient/client, and you can be seen as often and have as much access to us as you choose. The strength and heart of our work together is connection through the Doctor/Patient and Coaching/Client relationships.

You will experience integrative healthcare that revolves around you, your concerns, and your symptoms.  Don’t be surprised if we determine that there is nothing wrong with you, because we don’t always focus on disease, but rather on finding your health and continuing to strengthen that in you.

Our direct care model means you have direct access to your healthcare team, fostering a strong doctor-patient relationship. This includes emails during business hours and emergent triage for after hours. Say goodbye to long wait times for scheduling, followed by rushed appointments—our focus is on quality, not quantity. We believe in spending the time necessary to understand your concerns, answer your questions, and create a personalized, holistic roadmap to optimal health.

The Gold Standard Program:

This is for those who want the most access to Dr. Louder and to the Health and Wellness Coaching. In medicine, the gold standard means the best of the best. This ultimate program is the most comprehensive and transformative, because you work extensively with Dr. Louder and the health and wellness coach, guided by your genomics and other functional and regular testing, to transform your health. You have unlimited amounts of visits with both aspects of our care, clinical medicine and health and wellness coaching. Any physician can find disease, but a healer finds health and then aligns it with the body’s inherent capacity to heal. Combining this approach with an understanding of how the emotions are a significant component to our well-being, true transformative healing can occur.

You may be facing a significant diagnosis or a set of symptoms that have latterly beset you in life, yet you desire to get well, to feel well, and to be well. You may have a lot of traumatic events that have impacted your emotional and physical health, or perhaps you’re recovering from a significant illness and you feel stuck in your healing. If any of the above scenarios apply, this program may be for you.

Direct Care Model:

Not ready to join the Gold Standard plan, but still want the best that holistic functional medicine has to offer? The Direct Care Model may be a good fit. By joining our program and our practice, you can choose how often you want appointments and what you want your appointments to be. Then you book them at your convenience and pay as you go. This includes visits in-person in Holland, Michigan, or virtually, with Dr. Louder or with the Health and Wellness Coach.

What To Expect:

The most tangible outcomes include: Improved understanding of your current health needs, individualized guided programs with clear steps to address your symptoms with resolution of metabolic imbalances, reduced fatigue, improved emotional health, nutritional status, fitness levels, and changes in lab values that support your known recovery of health and wellness. As this is a truly holisitic approach, patients also report emotional healing that brings clarity and peacefulness of heart, mind, and soul. Other intangibles include improved relationships, job performance, hobby participation, and a sense of wellness restored throughout your life.

An Interview With Mary Louder, DO

What is Your Philosophy of Care?

As a seasoned Osteopathic physician with three decades of experience, my philosophy of care is deeply rooted in compassion, holistic healing, and a commitment to addressing the unique needs of each patient. After graduating from Michigan State University, I have honed my skills in both Integrative Holistic Medicine and Family Medicine, allowing me to offer a comprehensive and patient-centered approach to healthcare.

In my practice, I have evolved towards a focus on holistic functional medicine, recognizing the interconnectedness of physical, mental, and emotional well-being. I firmly believe that true health involves not only the absence of disease but also the optimization of each individual's unique potential for vitality. By integrating traditional medical knowledge with evidence-based holistic practices, I strive to empower my patients to take an active role in their well-being.

Trauma-informed care is a cornerstone of my practice, acknowledging the profound impact that past experiences can have on one's health. I approach each patient with sensitivity and awareness, creating a safe and supportive environment for healing. By understanding and addressing the underlying effects of trauma, I aim to facilitate a comprehensive healing process that goes beyond the surface symptoms. We use our specialized Self Compassion and Connection™ protocol with all patients, especially when treating complex PTSD and its relationship to chronic illness.

Genomics plays a pivotal role in my practice, allowing for a personalized and precise approach to healthcare. By leveraging advancements in genetic medicine, I tailor treatment plans to everyone’s unique genetic makeup, optimizing therapeutic outcomes and minimizing potential side effects. With our Hero’s Genome™ program, you learn to become the hero of your own health journey. It is key to your lifelong health and wellness.

What Differentiates You from Other Physicians?

What truly differentiates me is a combination of my extensive experience, specialized expertise, and a patient-centered approach. With thirty years of dedicated practice in family medicine and functional medicine, I deliver precise diagnoses and effective treatments. My commitment to staying at the forefront of medical advancements ensures that my patients receive the most innovative and evidence-based care available.

Moreover, my approach places a strong emphasis on personalized patient care. I believe in building a strong doctor-patient relationship, taking the time to thoroughly understand each patient's unique medical history, concerns, and goals. This enables me to tailor treatment plans that not only address the immediate health issues, but also consider the individual's overall well-being.

In addition to my technical proficiency, I am known for my empathetic communication style. I strive to ensure patients and their families fully comprehend their medical conditions and treatment options, fostering a collaborative decision-making process. This commitment to transparency and open communication creates a supportive environment that contributes to better treatment outcomes and patient satisfaction.

Furthermore, I actively engage in ongoing professional development, participating in conferences, research initiatives, and continuous education programs. This dedication allows me to stay ahead of the curve in terms of medical advancements, and my patients to benefit from the latest breakthroughs in healthcare.

Ultimately, it's this blend of experience, personalized care, effective communication, and a commitment to ongoing learning that distinguishes my practice. I am not just a physician; I am a partner in my patients' journey to health and well-being.

Dr. Louder, why did you switch from a fee-for-service model to a membership model of care?

Well, there are several factors that went into my decision:

  1. Patient-Centered Care: A membership model allows physicians to focus on preventive and proactive healthcare rather than reactive services. This aligns with the principles of holistic functional medicine, which often emphasizes a comprehensive and individualized approach to patient care.

  2. Time and Attention: Holistic functional medicine often requires more time spent with each patient to understand their lifestyle, genetic factors, and environmental influences. A membership model provides the financial flexibility to allocate more time to each patient, fostering a deeper doctor-patient relationship.

  3. Preventive Care Emphasis: Holistic functional medicine often emphasizes preventive care and lifestyle interventions. A membership model can encourage patients to seek regular check-ups and preventive measures, as these are often included in the membership fee.

  4. Stability and Predictability For Both Physicians and Patients: A membership model provides financial stability and predictability. Physicians can have a more predictable income stream, while patients can budget for healthcare costs more effectively, as they know what to expect with a fixed monthly or annual fee.

  5. Reduced Administrative Burden: Fee-for-service models often involve complex billing and administrative tasks. Switching to a membership model can simplify these processes, allowing physicians to focus more on patient care and less on paperwork.

  6. Long-Term Relationships: A membership model fosters long-term relationships between physicians and patients. This continuity of care can be especially beneficial in holistic functional medicine, where understanding the patient's history and ongoing health journey is crucial.

  7. Alignment with Holistic Values: The philosophy of holistic functional medicine often aligns with a more patient-centered, comprehensive, transformative, and proactive approach to healthcare. A membership model is often better suited to support these values compared to the transactional nature of fee-for-service.

  8. Enhanced Accessibility: A membership model might include benefits such as extended office hours, telemedicine options, or quicker access to the physician. This can enhance accessibility and convenience for patients seeking holistic functional medicine services.

Should I Keep My Primary Care Physician If I Become a Member of CAIRN MEDICAL?

Whether or not to keep your primary care physician when joining a holistic functional medicine membership model of care depends on several factors, and it's a decision that should be made based on your individual health needs, preferences, and the specifics of the functional medicine practice you're considering. Here are some points to consider:

  1. Compatibility of Approaches: Evaluate whether the holistic functional medicine approach aligns with your health philosophy and preferences. Functional medicine often takes a more comprehensive and personalized approach, addressing the root causes of health issues rather than just managing symptoms.

  2. Communication and Coordination: Consider how well your primary care physician and the functional medicine provider can communicate and collaborate. Effective coordination between healthcare providers is crucial for comprehensive care, especially if you have existing health conditions.

  3. Health Insurance Coverage: Check your health insurance coverage to see if it includes services provided by the functional medicine practice. Membership models might not be covered by insurance, and you may need to assess the financial implications. Also, consider the complexity of your health needs. If you have chronic conditions or complex health issues, having a primary care physician who is aware of your medical history can be beneficial.

  4. Accessibility and Convenience: Consider the convenience and accessibility of the holistic functional medicine model. If it offers more personalized, timely, and accessible care, it could be a benefit.

  5. Cost Considerations: Assess the cost implications. Functional medicine membership models often involve fees or subscription costs. Compare these costs with what you currently pay for traditional healthcare, factoring in insurance coverage.

  6. Personal Comfort and Trust: Trust and comfort with your healthcare providers are crucial. If you have a strong relationship with your primary care physician and feel confident in their care, you may want to maintain that relationship.

  7. Long-Term vs. Short-Term Focus: Evaluate the focus of the functional medicine practice. Some functional medicine approaches may prioritize long-term health optimization over immediate acute care. Ensure that the approach aligns with your health goals.

What If I Move During the Year?

Even if you can no longer reach our clinic in Holland, Michigan, you may continue with remote or virtual visits with both Dr. Louder and the Health and Wellness Coaching team.  At the end of the year, you may then consider what your next year’s needs are and if remaining a member is right for you.  There are no refunds because of moving due to the virtual nature of our program.

How Do I Learn More About the Various Plans to Know Which One Is Best For My Personal Medical Needs?
